How to spot a recruitment scam

During an online search or sneaky peek at what’s around job-wise during your lunch break, you can occasionally come across a vacancy that sounds too good to pass up.

But beware – not all vacancies are what they seem and you could be playing straight into the hands of the increasing amounts of unscrupulous individuals operating some form of recruitment scam.

As much as we’d like to think that we’re all pretty savvy and clued up when it comes to being taken in by such things, some recruitment scams are very well executed and plenty of people are being reeled in on a daily basis.

Here’s a few tips to help you avoid falling for a recruitment scam and stay safe when job seeking online.

It sounds too good to be true
…so it probably is. A huge salary for part-time hours? Massive bonuses for not a lot of effort on your part? Take a step back and think about how realistic the vacancy sounds, you’ll often find that recruitment scams also have sketchy details on the role and responsibilities and no clear job description.

If this is the case and it sounds too good to be true, then don’t respond with any personal information and walk away.

Hired on the spot
Although it’s common practice to be asked to send a CV online or via email, the vast majority of employers will want to meet with you face-to-face after conducting some form of telephone interview or discussion.

So if you’ve sent your CV and been hired on the spot without any form of personal meeting at their premises, then alarm bells should be ringing.

You’ve never heard of the company
Ok, so you can’t be expected to have heard of every company, but you can do a little background research before you decide to engage with them. Many recruitment scams have a website attached to them, so just because they have one doesn’t mean that its genuine.

Try to do a search on social media, Trust Pilot or Companies House online to see if the company does actually exist and what others say about them first.
