National Minimum Wage

National Minimum Wage

The national minimum wage (NMW) is a legal right which covers almost all workers in the UK. It became law on 1 April 1999 to prevent unduly low pay and also to help create a level playing field for employers. From the 1st October 2011 the National Minimum Wage will be increasing so it’s vital that your business is ready for the change.

Rates from 1 October 2011

The NMW rates are reviewed each year by the Low Pay Commission and from 1st October 2011:

• the main rate for workers aged 21 and over will increase to £6.08
• the 18-20 rate will increase to £4.98
• the 16-17 rate for workers above school leaving age but under 18 will increase to £3.68
• the apprentice rate, for apprentices under 19 or 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship will increase to £2.60

We’ve also put together an informative factsheet detailing some interesting historical payment rates, NMW entitlement and legal guidelines to help guide and support you through the increase. Click to view or download the factsheet as PDF here.
