Is January really the best time to start your job search?

With many of us looking forward to the Christmas break, the prospect of starting a new job search couldn’t be further from our minds.

For those thinking that they might test the job market waters in the new year, statistics show that year after year many employees flock to jobs boards and start polishing up their CV’s after having the time to reflect on their current career situation over the festive season.

It’s not unusual for workers to feel a little gloomy at the prospect of returning to work after the Christmas holidays, and each January the rate of job applications for roles peaks to the highest levels experienced all year meaning greater competition for the job vacancies available.

So, when is the best time to start your job search?

As well as directly after the Christmas holidays, the end of the school summer holidays sees a sharp spike in the amount of jobseekers searching for a new opportunity. Basically, any time proceeding holidays of over a week seem to get people re-evaluating their career prospects and employers see a dramatic increase in the number of applications that they receive.

Although these periods might not see a dramatic fall in the amount of job opportunities available, you can bet that the competition for the roles available will be far fiercer than they would in say May or June.

What’s also worth considering is that some companies shut down or operate only basic functions of the Christmas period, so they will take a few weeks to return to normal employee capacity as many employees like to take holidays in the first week of January to extend their break.

This means that putting together recruitment plans is often left until slightly later in the first quarter of the year as employers play catch up with essential tasks before putting in place their recruitment strategy for the next year.
