Accounts Assistant / Sales Ledger Clerk – Stoke on Trent – Finance and Accounting

  • Working Pattern: Full-time, Monday to Friday
  • Salary: Up to £30,000 per annum DOE

What You’ll Be Doing

As the Accounts Assistant / Sales Ledger Clerk, you’ll play a key role in keeping supplier accounts accurate and up to date. Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Take full ownership of the sales ledger and debtor position
  • Proactively chase overdue debts by phone and email in line with agreed credit terms
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with customers to ensure timely payment
  • Resolve payment queries efficiently, liaising with sales, operations, and senior finance staff where required
  • Monitor credit limits and highlight any risks or deteriorating payment trends
  • Prepare weekly debtor reports, highlighting aged debt, high‑risk accounts, and actions taken
  • Support cashflow forecasting by providing accurate and timely debtor information
  • Prepare, send, notify and follow up on project-based and recurring invoices.
  • Assist with bank reconciliations
  • Support month‑end processes, including accruals and ledger reviews
  • Maintain accurate finance records and filing in line with internal controls

What We’re Looking For

We’re keen to hear from people who have:

  • Previous experience in a Accounts Assistant or Credit Controller role, ideally within a multi-entity or group environment
  • Good Excel skills and experience using accounting systems / ERPs
  • Confident communicator, comfortable chasing debt by phone and email
  • Excellent numerical accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills and the confidence to liaise with colleagues and suppliers
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines

It would be great (but not essential) if you also have:

  • Experience working in a shared service or centralised finance team
  • An AAT qualification or are currently working towards one
