How to be sure it’s the right job for you

Like many candidates I speak to on a daily basis, you’re probably casting your net far and wide to find the right job for you. You might have several interviews lined up already, and that’s why it’s important that you get the most out of your up and coming meetings to be 100% certain that it’s the best fit for your individual circumstances.

During the interview, you’ll almost certainly be going over the standard CV items that you’d expect in any interview – but generally speaking this brief meeting won’t really give you a good ‘feel’ about whether or not this company might be the best fit for you.

Company culture is a big thing when it comes to being truly happy in a role. It’s something that you really can’t be totally sure of unless you’ve actually been there and experienced it for yourself.

However, there are a few things that you can do to see how happy current employees are in their positions and key pieces of information you can pick up during your interview that will give you a good idea if this is the right job for you.

Ask around

Get those social media muscles working and ask if any of your friends know anyone who either did or is currently working for the company. If you find someone who is and doesn’t mind you asking them a few polite questions on how they find their role and if they enjoy working there then this could offer you some useful insights.

Just be aware that asking really personal questions about salary won’t be well received, so it’s best if you stick to general questions on what it’s like to work for the company. It’s also worth taking into account that someone who’s not had such a positive experience of the company might be a little negative in their views, so it’s up to you how much you read into their comments.

Talk to the interviewer

You’ll be asked if you have any questions during the interview, so here’s your chance to find out more about the company’s culture. See if it aligns with your own. The interviewer will probably mention any perks or benefits that come along with the package. This will give you a good idea about how well they look after their staff.

It’s also worth asking (in the nicest possible way) if staff tend to stay or progress in their roles. This is a great indicator to find out if employees stay with the company long term.
